The nature of printing inks Standard Pantone® inks are transparent. The only offset printing inks which are not transparent are metallic inks or those mixed with opaque white rather than transparent white. What this means to the designer is that two inks can be printed together in varying proportions to yield more colors than just shades of the two basic colors.
The top two bars are the basic colors. The middle bar shows gradients of the colors together. Notice that they make nearly a gray in the center. The bottom two bars are the same solid colors as at the top with a gradient of the other color overlaid on it. Here is another example:
