Most photographs have too many colors to try and show a realistic
simulation with only two inks. This does not mean that pleasing
separation effects cannot be achieved. On the right is a photograph which
contains a wide range of colors.
The
image to the left is a duotone of a black & white version of the
same photograph. Using black and a brown ink produces an image
with a pleasing warm and antique quality.
The final version here is a color separation made up of information
extracted from the original full-color scan and then printed
with reddish brown and black inks. This approach also yields many of the
same warm and antique characteristics, but with a much wider
range of color variation than is possible with a duotone.
